The extract of garlic was found to have a significant protective action against a fat induced increase in serum cholesterol and plasma fibrinogen and in fibrinolytic activity. The volatile oil contains allicin, an active odorous principle in Garlic. A study by Silagy and Neil (1994) showed that garlic supplements have an important part to play in the treatment of high cholesterol. Overall, a 12% reduction in total cholesterol was shown over a placebo and that this reduction was normally evident after only 4 weeks treatment and was considered likely to persist for as long as the study was in progress. The largest study so far was conducted in Germany where 261 patients were given either garlic powder tablets or a placebo. After a 12 week treatment period mean serum cholesterol levels dropped by 12% in the garlic treated group and triglycerides dropped by 17% compared to the placebo group. Garlic is used as a carminative, aphrodisiac, expectorant, and stimulant. It possesses antiinflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, antiarthritic, hypolipidemic, anticoagulant, hypoproteinemic, hypocholesteremic, antibacterial, antifungal, antihypertensive and hypoglycemic action. It is used in dermatophytosis, cough, intermittent fever, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, reduction of mineralization and antifertility. The platelet and hypolipidemic activities of Garlic ensures smooth coronary function. Garlic is also a nerve stimulant and revigorating tonic that has been known for its value in cases of sexual weakness. Garlic is commonly used to fight infection, increase circulation and help prevent cardiovascular disease. Garlic has been known to detoxify the body by cleansing the kidneys and increasing urine flow. Furthermore, Garlic's healing properties make it an ideal agent for fighting colds and flu.

Dietary Advice
Since cholesterol levels tend to increase with age, paying attention to diet and exercise is particularly important as you get older. Cholesterol levels are readily controllable, primarily through changes in your diet. Saturated fats, raise cholesterol more than any other component in your diet. Leave out saturated fats like butter, cheese, whole milk, ice cream, red meat and some vegetable fats found in tropical oils like coconut and palm from your diet. Eat fruits, vegetables, brown rice, barley (a good source of soluble fiber, the kind that soaks up fats and cholesterol and escorts them out of the body), beans, potatoes and pasta, prepared or dressed with monounsaturated fats in olive and canola oils (the so-called Mediterranean diet concept). Also eat cold-water fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines and herring) rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce serum lipids, among many other healthful advantages. Controlling smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes, is important to reduce your overall risk.
